(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Ye Shuhui and Ms. Li Shufen, his wife, were tried in the Development Zone Court in Dalian on March 27, 2014. The courtroom was filled to capacity, with the vast majority of the seats taken by police, agents from the 610 Office, and others with unknown identities. Only three seats remained for the couple's family members. Outside the courthouse, police and plainclothes agents patrolled the grounds.
Mr. Ye and Ms. Li were illegally arrested on July 6, 2012, for installing satellite receivers. The police used excessive force during the arrest and injured Ms. Ye's leg.
Two previously scheduled trials, on January 24 and March 12 of this year, were postponed.
On the day of the trial, police cars were parked outside the courthouse entrance, and officers patrolled the building perimeter. The usually quiet parking lot and nearby streets were filled with police cars, as well as vehicles from the 610 Office and the Political and Legal Affairs Committee.
Plainclothes officers were scattered around the surrounding area. They took photos of passersby and made a point to loudly slander Falun Gong to pedestrians.
Background on the Case
More than 70 Falun Gong practitioners were arrested by the local police department, 610 Office, Political and Legal Affairs Committee, Domestic Security Division, and neighborhood community offices in Dalian on July 6, 2012. The practitioners were arrested after they helped to install satellite receivers capable of transmitting overseas television networks.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Dalian Economic and Technological Development Zone charged 11 of the practitioners on November 8. Others were detained or charged elsewhere and were tortured and abused. Their homes were ransacked, and their cash, bank cards, computers, books, and other personal valuables were also confiscated.
