(Minghui.org) Ms. Kong Yucui, a 67-year-old Falun Dafa practitioner, was arrested in November 2014. On January 4, 2015, her trial was held in the Ji County Detention Center because the authorities insisted that she was too weak to appear in court.
The court only allowed her attorney to attend the proceedings, claiming that Ms. Kong would become overly excited if she saw her family, which would adversely affect her health.
Arrest and Trauma
Ms. Kong, who is from Ji County, Tianjin City, was arrested on November 4, 2014, for talking about Falun Dafa at a farmers' market. She was taken to the Ji County Detention Center, where she was also detained in 2010 (Tianjin City Practitioner Ms. Kong Yucui Again Sentenced to Forced Labor). To protest her arrest and detention, Ms. Kong initiated a hunger strike in the detention center.
Her hunger strike resulted in severe hypertension, which concerned the police, who then referred her case to the Procuratorate to avoid responsibility for her health problems.
When Ms. Kong's family insisted on attending her hearing, the tribunal president asked them, “Do you agree to accept all responsibility for any health problems that your appearance in court might cause?” From that comment, her family suspected that Ms. Kong's physical condition was severe enough that she should go to a hospital for treatment; however, the court refused to release her on medical bail.
Ms. Kong's husband and son went to see the president of the court, who agreed to show them a video of the proceedings after the hearing. However, the court only released limited footage, which caused her husband to wonder what was left out and why.
Family Weary and Concerned
Ms. Kong's family has made multiple trips between the court and the detention center in recent days. They urged the detention center to give written documentation to the procurator and the court, certifying that Ms. Kong's condition is not suitable for detention.
The court requested proof from the Tianjin Armed Police Hospital before they would release her. The hospital claims that they have treated Ms. Kong's hypertension by putting medicine in her food; however, detention officials still deny her family visits.
Her family is concerned and has many questions: What medicine did they put into Ms. Kong's food? How could a healthy person become critically ill in just two months?
